Best Beach Activities
Swimming at Lifeguarded Beaches

For families visiting Anna Maria Island, swimming near a lifeguard tower is the safest and most stress-free way to enjoy the Gulf. Lifeguards actively monitor water conditions, post and adjust beach warning flags throughout the day, and are trained to respond quickly if currents strengthen or swimmers need assistance. Anna Maria Island has lifeguards stationed at Manatee Public Beach and along Coquina Beach and nearby Cortez Beach. For a detailed breakdown of what each flag color means, my Complete Beach Warning Flags on Anna Maria Island: My Insider Guide is essential reading before your first beach day. For exact locations, hours, and how to choose the safest spots to swim, my Lifeguard Stations on Anna Maria Island: My Insider Guide has it all covered.
Beach Safety Tip: Borrow a Free Life Vest

On the north end of Anna Maria Island, Manatee County introduced the Beach Like a Local life vest initiative, providing complimentary U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vests for visitors and residents. Borrow-and-return stands are located at Bayfront Park and on the beach along Gulf Boulevard between Magnolia Avenue and Palm Avenue. The stands include infant, child, and adult sizes and offer an added layer of safety when swimming in areas without lifeguard coverage.
Sandcastle Building
Anna Maria Island’s powdery white sand is perfect for sandcastle building, making it one of the simplest and most rewarding beach activities for families. The sand is soft, easy to shape, and holds moisture well, ideal conditions for building everything from simple towers to elaborate moat-surrounded castles. The best sand for building is found closer to the waterline, where it is damp enough to pack and mold without collapsing. Before leaving, gently flatten your creations and fill in any deep holes to protect local wildlife, including nesting sea turtles, and keep the beach safe for other visitors.
Shelling & Shark Tooth Hunting
Shelling turns a simple beach walk into a treasure hunt, and Anna Maria Island delivers. From scanning the shoreline for sand dollars and coquina shells to hunting for shark teeth near Bean Point and Coquina Beach, it is one of those activities that keeps kids happily occupied for hours. My Shelling on Anna Maria Island: My Insider Guide covers the best spots, timing tips, and what to look for.
Skimboarding & Boogie Boarding
Skimboarding and boogie boarding are classic beach activities that add just the right amount of excitement for kids and teens. The island’s gentle Gulf waves and gradual shoreline make it an ideal place for beginners to learn and build confidence in the water. Morning hours usually bring calmer surf and fewer crowds, making it the best time for younger riders to practice safely. Always check the beach warning flags before heading into the water.
Dolphin Spotting from Shore
Spotting dolphins in the wild is a magical experience for kids and adults alike, and Anna Maria Island offers excellent opportunities to see them right from the beach. Dolphins are commonly seen swimming just offshore, especially during the quieter morning and evening hours. Some of the best places for shoreline dolphin watching include Coquina Beach and the peaceful northern tip at Bean Point. Bring binoculars if you have them, but dolphins are often visible with the naked eye.
Beach Picnics
A beach picnic is one of the easiest ways to turn a simple day on Anna Maria Island into a memorable family experience. Family-friendly spots like Coquina Beach and Manatee Public Beach are especially ideal, thanks to convenient amenities, shaded areas, and nearby facilities. For an even more effortless experience, my Beach Chair Dining on Anna Maria Island: My Insider Guide covers how to enjoy restaurant-quality meals delivered right to your beach chair without ever leaving the sand.

Manatee Public Beach Playground is conveniently located near one of the island’s most popular lifeguarded beaches, making it easy to transition between swimming and playground time.

Free and held Monday mornings from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM during May, June, July, and August at Holmes Beach City Hall, these talks are hosted by volunteers from the AMI Shorebird and Turtle Monitoring Group and cover why lighting, beach furniture, and nighttime activity matter so much during nesting season. A fascinating experience for both kids and adults.
Trolley
The free, open-air Anna Maria Island Trolley runs daily along the length of the island from the Anna Maria City Pier area down to Coquina Beach, with approximately 35 stops along Gulf Drive. It typically operates from around 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM with frequent pickups throughout the day. Kids love riding the colorful trolley while parents appreciate the stress-free convenience, especially during peak season when parking in popular areas can be limited.
Movies
For a rainy-day activity or a break from the sun, Regal Oakmont is the closest movie theater to Anna Maria Island. Modern reclining seats, classic movie snacks, and the latest Hollywood releases in cool, air-conditioned comfort. An easy nearby escape after a busy beach day.
Skate Park
The Anna Maria Island Skate Park at Holmes Beach Skate Park, 5801 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, is open daily from 10:00 AM to sunset. Ramps and obstacles suitable for beginner to intermediate skaters and scooter riders. West Coast Surf Shop offers skateboards and penny boards for purchase if you need equipment. A great late afternoon option when beach heat peaks.
Library

The Island Branch Library in Holmes Beach is a lovely hidden gem for a calm, air-conditioned break from the sun. Part of the Manatee County Public Library System, it offers books, magazines, children’s materials, comfortable seating, and occasional story times and community events. A surprisingly delightful stop for families who want to slow down for a bit.
Coquina Beach Market

Donut Shop
If you want to guarantee smiles before 9 AM, head straight to The Donut Experiment on Pine Avenue. Start with a warm cake donut and choose your icing and toppings. Chocolate frosting with rainbow sprinkles, maple with bacon, vanilla with crushed cookies, the combinations are nearly endless. Watching the donuts being assembled adds to the excitement. Grab a box to enjoy on the sand, take them back to your rental for a slow breakfast, or swing by before hopping on the trolley.
Frozen Treats

When the Florida sun is doing its thing, frozen treats are the ultimate cooldown strategy. North Shore Cafe is a great stop for smoothies and lighter chilled drinks after a beach morning. Blueberries Cafe and Wine offers smoothies and refreshing café-style drinks in a relaxed indoor setting. Anna Maria Island Frozen Yogurt and Acai lets everyone build their own bowl with frozen yogurt, acai, and a wide variety of toppings, a hit with kids who love creating their own combinations.
Museums & Educational Fun
Anna Maria Island Historical Museum

For a deeper understanding of the island beyond its beaches and sunsets, the Anna Maria Island Historical Museum in the City of Anna Maria offers a charming look at the people and stories that shaped this little slice of Florida. Vintage photographs, original maps, and artifacts from the island’s fishing village roots bring its early days to life. The old jail cell outside is always a favorite photo stop. A meaningful educational break from the beach that takes less than an hour and costs nothing.
If you’d like to explore more of the island’s backstory, be sure to read my The History of Anna Maria Island, where I dive further into its founding families, early development, and the unique charm that still defines it today.
Anna Maria City Jail

Located near the Anna Maria City Pier, this tiny open-air structure from the early 1900s was once used to temporarily hold rowdy visitors in the island’s early days. Today it is more of a fun photo stop than a serious historical site, but it gives a charming glimpse into how laid-back and close-knit the island community has always been. Worth a quick stop if you are already exploring the north end of the island near Pine Avenue or the pier.
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature
Just a short drive over the bridge in Bradenton, The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature offers an engaging blend of science, history, and hands-on discovery. The largest natural and cultural history museum on Florida’s Gulf Coast, it features the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat where you can often see rescued manatees up close, exhibits on Florida’s prehistoric past and maritime history, and a planetarium with immersive shows. An easy and worthwhile excursion when you want a break from the beach that adds real depth to your trip.
Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium
Located just south in Sarasota, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is a fantastic educational side trip for families curious about the ocean life you have been spotting from the beach. Touch tanks let kids gently interact with certain marine species, and exhibits on sharks, sea turtles, manatees, rays, and reef fish make it both fun and inspiring. As an active research facility focused on marine conservation and coral restoration, it is the kind of visit that might spark a future marine biologist in the family.
Florida Maritime Museum
Located in historic Cortez Fishing Village, the Florida Maritime Museum is housed in a restored 1912 schoolhouse and focuses on the history of commercial fishing, boat building, and the maritime traditions that shaped this region. Exhibits on traditional wooden skiffs, early fishing tools, and the lives of the families who built the legacy of Cortez make it an engaging stop for both adults and kids. Admission is free, the grounds are open and interactive enough to keep younger visitors engaged, and it pairs perfectly with a walk around the surrounding village and a dockside lunch afterward.
