If you’re exploring Anna Maria Island and happen to be wandering through Holmes Beach, you might hear them before you see them—bright, chatty parrots perched outside the Sun and Surf Beach Shop.
It’s one of those unexpected little island moments that catches you off guard in the best way.
A Beach Shop with a Surprise
The Sun and Surf Beach Shop sits in the Island Shopping Center in Holmes Beach, filled with all the usual coastal favorites—T-shirts, cover-ups, souvenirs, swimwear, and beach décor.
But the real standout isn’t inside the store… it’s right outside on the sidewalk.
Meet the Feathered Locals

Romeo says hello.
Along the front of the shop are a group of colorful parrots that have become a bit of an unofficial island landmark.
The flock includes African grey parrots, macaws, and other exotic birds, each with its own personality. Some are calm observers, others are bold and playful, and a few are full-on entertainers who seem to enjoy the attention of passing visitors.
Locals say the birds have been part of the Island Shopping Center for decades, quietly becoming one of those “you just have to see it” Anna Maria Island experiences.
Personality Included

They do come with a warning!
Each bird has a name displayed on its cage, along with a very honest reminder for visitors—“I will bite!”
And while they’re undeniably charming, macaws in particular are incredibly strong birds, so they’re best admired from a respectful distance while they chat, squawk, and show off their colors.
Some will whistle. Some will talk. Some will absolutely ignore you. And a few—like Romeo—might just surprise you with a loud “hello.”
When to Visit
The birds are usually outside during store hours, adding extra personality to your beach shop stop. At closing time, they’re safely brought indoors for the evening.
It’s a small detail, but one that makes this spot feel uniquely local—part shop, part roadside attraction, part island memory in the making.
