Season by Season

Spring · March to May

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit. Temperatures warm from the mid-70s in March to the mid-80s by May, humidity stays manageable, and the Gulf is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and long afternoons on the beach. Breezy evenings are perfect for waterfront dining or sunset strolls. March brings spring breakers and lively beach energy, April hosts festivals and events, and May is prime tarpon fishing season.

Summer · June to September

Summer is hot, humid, and wonderfully tropical. Daytime temperatures reach the upper 80s to low 90s, and the Gulf feels like bathwater. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but brief, typically clearing to dramatic skies and spectacular sunsets. Plan outdoor activities earlier in the day and embrace the quick tropical showers when they roll through. June marks the start of sea turtle nesting season, and July brings festive Independence Day celebrations on the water.

Summer swimming is effortless and the Gulf is warm and inviting, but the intensity of the sun and heat catches many visitors off guard. A hat, polarized sunglasses, and a lightweight cover-up make a noticeable difference between a short swim and comfortably spending hours at the beach. Quick-dry clothing is especially useful when moving between the water and nearby restaurants or shaded spots. Fall · October to November

Fall is Anna Maria Island’s best-kept secret. Temperatures stay in the upper 70s to mid-80s, humidity drops, and the Gulf remains warm from summer. Crowds thin, beaches quiet down, and the pace becomes noticeably more relaxed. October marks the start of stone crab season, and November brings migratory birds and peaceful, breezy days perfect for beachcombing and exploring.

Winter · December to February

Winter is mild, sunny, and far more pleasant than most of the country. Daytime temperatures range from the upper 60s to mid-70s, with cooler evenings that call for a light layer. Rainfall is low and humidity is minimal. December brings holiday markets and boat parades. January is one of the quietest months on the island. February picks up again as spring approaches. Many visitors pack only swimwear and regret not bringing a thin sweatshirt for morning swims and sunset beach walks.

Best Beaches for Swimming

Bean Point Beautiful for walking and photography, but not recommended for swimming. Strong currents, shifting sandbars, and no lifeguards make conditions unpredictable.

Manatee Public Beach The safest and most swim-friendly beach on the island. Gentle shoreline, calm waters, and regular lifeguard presence make it ideal for families. Convenient amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, and nearby food options.

Holmes Beach The central stretch of the island offers consistently good conditions and a reliable balance between quiet and accessible.

Bradenton Beach Calm waters, wide stretches of soft white sand, and a gradual slope into the Gulf make this an easy, comfortable swim. Its location near Bridge Street shops and restaurants makes it easy to combine a beach day with exploring.

Coquina Beach Laid-back atmosphere, calm clear water, and a line of Australian pines offering natural shade. One of the most relaxed swimming spots on the island, especially when combined with a picnic or beach takeout.

Best Time of Day to Swim

Morning, between 8 and 11 AM, is generally the best time to swim. The Gulf is at its calmest, winds are lighter, and water clarity is at its best. Afternoons can bring choppier conditions and summer storms. Evenings are also pleasant, especially around sunset when winds settle and temperatures cool.

What to Pack

Seasonal packing on Anna Maria Island is not about dramatic weather shifts. It is about comfort and timing.

Spring: Warming water and low humidity mean longer swims. Extra sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are essentials. The midday sun is stronger than it looks.

Summer: Sun intensity and heat are the main challenges. A hat, polarized sunglasses, and a lightweight cover-up make a real difference. Quick-dry clothing earns its place every day.

Fall: The water stays warm but mornings and evenings cool down. A light layer extends your beach time, especially if you stay through sunset.

Winter: The Gulf can feel cool, especially in the mornings. A thin sweatshirt or long-sleeve cover-up makes early swims and sunset walks far more comfortable. Peak season also means bringing your own beach gear rather than relying on rentals.
