Memorial Day through Labor Day
Summer on Anna Maria Island is the real deal. Hot, vibrant, a little steamy, and completely unapologetic about it. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the island shifts into its most energetic season with full beaches, warm Gulf waters, holiday parades, and long golden evenings that make it hard to leave your chair.
If you know what to expect and how to plan around it, summer on Anna Maria Island is one of the best times to visit.
Weather: What to Expect
Summer on Anna Maria Island means heat and humidity, full stop. Temperatures run from the mid 70s overnight to the low 90s during the day, with July and August being the hottest months. The Gulf water temperature climbs to around 85°F, which makes it feel more like a warm bath than a refreshing dip, and that’s perfectly fine.
The bigger factor is the wet season. Florida really only has two seasons: wet and dry. The wet season runs from May through September, with the rainiest months being June through September, averaging 7 to 9 inches of rainfall per month. The good news is that summer rain showers are typically brief and often followed by sunshine. The pattern is predictable: beautiful sunny mornings, afternoon thunderstorms that roll in fast, and clear skies again by evening. Build your beach day around it and it’s rarely a problem.
The most humid months of the year are June, July, August, and September. It is humid for most of the day. Light, breathable clothing, a good SPF routine, and staying hydrated are non-negotiable. For everything you need to pack, see my Ultimate Guide to Must-Have Essentials for a Beach Bag.
A note on hurricane season: Florida’s official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August through October. However, the vast majority of summer days are beautiful. That said, travel insurance is always worth considering for Gulf Coast summer travel.

Summer Events & Festivals
Summer on Anna Maria Island has more going on than most visitors expect. Here are the highlights from Memorial Day through Labor Day. For a complete look at everything happening on the island throughout the year, see my Ultimate Guide to Anna Maria Island Festivals.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season Summer is the heart of sea turtle nesting season on Anna Maria Island. The official season runs May 1 through October 31, with beach lighting ordinances taking effect after 9 p.m. to protect hatchlings and conservation patrols marking nests along the coastline. The island’s most common nesters are loggerhead sea turtles, though green sea turtles also nest here. If you spot orange stakes and flags on the beach, those are marked nests. Give them space and never disturb them.
Turtle Tracks and Shorebird Facts Talks Every Monday from May through August at 10 AM at Holmes Beach City Hall, 5801 Marina Drive, the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring organization holds free educational talks about sea turtle nesting and shorebird conservation. Free, family friendly, and genuinely fascinating for kids and adults.
Tour de Turtles The Sea Turtle Conservancy partners with Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch to release a loggerhead sea turtle with a satellite transmitter as part of the annual Tour de Turtles event. It is free and open to the public with no registration needed. The exact beach location is announced the night before once a nesting turtle is located. This is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences you can have on the island and worth planning your trip around if the timing lines up.
Memorial Day Weekend The City of Anna Maria hosts its annual Memorial Day Patriotic Symphony Salute each year at 10 AM, a free 90-minute community tribute featuring the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra, a posting of colors by the Marine Corps, and remarks honoring those who gave their lives in service. The location has historically been City Pier Park but check locally before attending as it has moved to The Center of Anna Maria Island in recent years. All are welcome and seating is plentiful.
AMI Summer ArtWalk Series The AMI Summer ArtWalk Series kicks off on Pine Avenue in Anna Maria and runs through the summer months. It’s a relaxed evening stroll through local galleries, shops, and vendors with live music woven in. A perfect low-key summer evening.
Sundown Get Down Every third Thursday of the month from 4 to 9 PM, Historic Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach transforms into a pedestrian only street party. Bridge Street closes to traffic, local vendors set up, live music fills the block, and open containers are permitted along the street. The Monkey Bus runs a shuttle from Coquina Beach parking to Bridge Street during the event, and the free AMI Trolley stops nearby. It is one of the most consistently fun recurring events on the island and a perfect summer evening activity for families and adults alike. Check sundowngetdown.com for themes and dates.
4th of July The Fourth of July is the biggest summer event on the island. The Anna Maria Island 4th of July Parade winds through the island with floats, golf carts, and community spirit in full force. When the parade wraps up, the celebration moves to City Pier Park for the 4th of July Picnic Celebration from noon to 1:30 PM. Food, live entertainment, and activities for kids make it a full morning worth planning around.
Bradenton Red, White & Boom The Bradenton Red, White & Boom celebration takes place on the Bradenton Riverwalk and is worth the short drive over the bridge for an impressive fireworks display over the water.
AMI Kids Back-to-School Beach Bash The AMI Kids Back-to-School Beach Bash at Manatee Public Beach in Holmes Beach is a fun end-of-summer send-off for families before the season winds down heading into Labor Day.
Why Summer Still Works
Summer is peak season for families, and for good reason. School is out, the Gulf is warm, and the island’s full lineup of boat tours, water sports, paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing charters are all running at capacity. For everything on the water, see my Ultimate Guide to Water Activities on Anna Maria Island.
Mornings are the best time to be on the beach before the heat peaks and the afternoon storms roll in. Get out early, claim your spot, and plan a midday break for lunch or a shaded activity before heading back out in the late afternoon when the light is softer and the temperature drops a degree or two.

Beating the Heat
A few things that make a Gulf Coast summer genuinely comfortable:
The water is everything. At 85°F the Gulf isn’t cold, but it’s still a relief on a 90-degree afternoon. Get in often.
Early mornings are magic. The island before 9 AM in summer is genuinely beautiful and much cooler. A sunrise walk on the beach before the heat sets in is one of the best things you can do.
Afternoon thunderstorms are your cue. When the clouds build, use it. Lunch, a nap, a cold drink somewhere shaded, and you’re back on the beach by 4 PM for golden hour.
No-see-ums are active in summer. Especially at dawn and dusk near the water. Don’t skip the repellent. See my Ultimate Guide to No-See-Ums on Anna Maria Island for everything you need.
Stay hydrated. The humidity is real and it sneaks up on you. A good insulated tumbler is not optional in summer on the Gulf Coast.
Where to Eat
Summer heat makes waterfront dining and beach delivery especially appealing. You don’t always need to leave the sand to eat well on Anna Maria Island. See my Ultimate Guide to Beach Chair Dining on Anna Maria Island for everything that delivers right to your spot, and my Anna Maria Island Restaurant Guide for the full dining picture.
Where to Stay
Summer is peak season, which means availability goes fast and rates reflect it. Book early, especially for 4th of July weekend and any week that overlaps with a school break. Vacation rentals with private pools are particularly popular in summer for obvious reasons. For accommodation options, see my Ultimate Guide to Short-Stay Accommodations on Anna Maria Island.
Coastal Close
Summer on Anna Maria Island is hot, humid, a little unpredictable, and absolutely worth it. The Gulf is warm, the evenings are long, and the island has a particular energy this time of year that’s hard to find anywhere else. Come prepared, embrace the afternoon storms, and stay for the sunsets.
Until next time…
