Ultimate Guide to No-See-Ums on Anna Maria Island

Updated: May 2026

If you have ever come in from a beautiful evening on the beach covered in tiny, itchy bites with no idea what got you, chances are you have had your first encounter with no-see-ums. They are one of those things nobody warns you about before visiting Anna Maria Island, and by the time you notice them it is already too late.

What Are No See Ums?

No-see-ums are tiny biting insects also known as biting midges, sand gnats, or punkies. They belong to the Ceratopogonidae family and are one of the most common nuisances along Florida’s Gulf Coast, including Anna Maria Island. Despite their size, they pack a surprisingly unpleasant bite and can quickly turn a peaceful sunset into an itchy memory.

Size and Visibility

No-see-ums are extremely small, typically measuring between one and three millimeters in length. To put that in perspective, they are roughly the size of a pinhead. They are technically visible to the naked eye if you know what you are looking for, but most people never spot them before the damage is done. Their name says it all.

How They Bite

Unlike mosquitoes that pierce the skin with a needle-like mouth, no-see-ums use scissor-like mouthparts to cut into the skin and feed on blood. This is why their bites tend to be more irritating than a typical mosquito bite. Because they are so small, you often do not feel the bite until several minutes after it happens, which means by the time you realize they are around you have likely already been bitten multiple times.

Bite Reactions

Reactions to no-see-um bites vary from person to person. Common reactions include:

  • Small red dots that appear in clusters
  • Intense itching that can last several days
  • Raised welts or bumps around the bite site
  • Swelling and redness in more sensitive individuals

First-time visitors to Florida tend to react more strongly than locals who have built up some tolerance over time. Children and those with sensitive skin are also more prone to stronger reactions.

When Are They Most Active

No-see-ums are most active during dawn and dusk, making those beautiful Anna Maria Island sunrises and sunsets prime time for encounters. They tend to be worse in the warmer months from spring through fall, though on Anna Maria Island the mild winters mean they can appear year round. They thrive in humid, calm conditions and are less active on windy days.

Calm, still evenings near the water, mangroves, and marshy areas are when they are at their worst. If you are planning a sunset beach walk or an evening on the patio, this is when you want to be prepared.

Repellants

The good news is that no-see-ums are manageable with the right products. Here are the most effective options:

No Natz is my go-to and has been for over ten years. It is specifically formulated for no-see-ums and biting midges, plant-based, non-greasy, and works well for both adults and children. If there is one product I would put in every visitor’s bag before they set foot on the island, this is it. You can pick it up locally at the Ace Hardware on the island or shop it through my Amazon Storefront.

Skin So Soft by Avon is a longtime favorite among Gulf Coast locals. It was not originally designed as an insect repellant, but generations of Floridians have relied on it and it has developed quite the loyal following. It is worth keeping in your beach bag as an extra layer of protection.

What to Apply After a Bite

If you do get bitten, resist the urge to scratch. Breaking the skin can lead to infection and makes the itching worse. Here are the best options for relief:

  • Hydrocortisone cream helps reduce inflammation and itching
  • Calamine lotion soothes irritated skin
  • A cold compress or ice pack can bring down swelling and provide temporary relief
  • Aloe vera gel offers a natural soothing option, especially if you are already applying it for sun protection

A Few Extra Tips

  • Wear light, long-sleeved clothing during dawn and dusk if you are prone to reactions
  • Avoid heavily scented lotions and perfumes as they can attract no see ums
  • A small fan on your patio or outdoor seating area can help since they are weak fliers and struggle in even a light breeze
  • Staying away from standing water and marshy areas during peak hours reduces your exposure significantly
  • No-see-um repellant is a beach bag essential. For everything else worth packing for a day on the Gulf, see my Ultimate Guide to Must-Have Essentials for a Beach Bag.

Coastal Close

No-see-ums are a part of life on Anna Maria Island, but they do not have to ruin your time on the island. A little preparation goes a long way, and once you know what to look for and how to protect yourself, you can get back to enjoying everything Anna Maria Island has to offer without going home covered in bites.

Until next time…
