Bakra Pizza is one of the oldest restaurants in Split, tracing its origins back to 1947, although only becoming a pizzeria in 1984. They are located on a small street in the old neighborhood of Toć and near the ferry port of Split. Chef Frane Šerka prepares delicious pizzas from a wood-fired oven, premium steaks, and traditional Dalmatian food with just a pinch of soul.
The interior is decorated with the exposed stone walls, black wooden benches, red accents, and dimmed lighting.
They also cater to vegan and gluten free diets. These vegan and gluten-free options may not be obvious on the menu but they are more than willing to accommodate.
Everyone knows pizza originally came from Italy however, Croatians have deliciously adopted this poor man’s concoction. Bakra was recommended as the best pizza in Split by one of the deckhands on our ship, the Motor Boat Oscar. I can say it did not disappoint. The crust was thin and slightly crunchy. The balance of tomato sauce and mozzarella was perfect. The most popular Dalmatian pizza, the “pizza capricciosa”, comes with tomato sauce, oregano, cheese, baked ham, and mushrooms.
Trip Advisor awarded Bakra with the Travelers’ Choice Award in 2020.
Until next time…
