Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic, rewards visitors who look at it from above. The Dubrovnik Cable Car whisks you 778 meters up Mount Srđ in under four minutes, delivering one of the most dramatic panoramas in all of Europe: the red rooftops of the Old Town, the scatter of the Elaphiti Islands, and the impossibly blue Adriatic stretching to the horizon.
Dubrovnik was our embarkation port for a seven-night Croatian cruise, and we made sure to spend time exploring the city before boarding. If you’re planning something similar, you’ll find everything you need in Exploring the Stunning Croatian Coast on a Luxury Cruise.
A Brief History
The original cable cars date to 1969, carrying 15 passengers per cabin. They were destroyed during the siege of Dubrovnik in 1991. After a €5 million renovation, the system reopened in 2010 with a sleek modern upgrade: two bright orange cabins, each holding 32 passengers, running on a reversible single-wire track.
Getting to the Lower Station
The lower station is at Ulica Petra Krešimira IV. Two routes lead there from the Old Town:
- Via Stradun (faster): Take the stairs up from the eastern end of Stradun, a short but cardio-worthy climb.
- Via Ploče Gate: Exit through Ploče Gate and follow the winding streets uphill to the station. More scenic, less strenuous.
Hours
Summer (June–August): 9 AM to midnight. Hours shorten in the off-season. Check the official website or the base station board for current times.
Tickets & Prices
Check the Dubrovnik Cable Car website for current prices and to book in advance. During peak season, buying online saves you from a long queue. Tickets can be paid in euros or by card at the base station. Strollers are permitted on board. Children under 4 ride free.
At the Top
The upper station opens onto sweeping 360-degree views. Linger at Panorama Restaurant & Bar, which serves Mediterranean lunches and dinners, or just pull up a chair for a cold drink and fries with that view. A gift shop stocks the usual souvenirs if you want to take a piece of Dubrovnik home.

Adriatic Close
Some travel moments are worth every minute of the queue. Standing on Mount Srđ with the Old Town spread out below, the Adriatic glittering in every direction, is one of them. The cable car ride is short, but the view has a way of lingering long after you’ve come back down.
