A Ride on the Dubrovnik Cable Car

Dubrovnik is known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. This city, in southern Croatia, sits on a hill along the Adriatic Sea. The best vantage point of the city is from the top of Mount Srd. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of Dubrovnik Old Town, Elaphiti Islands, and the clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

How do you get there? The Dubrovnik cable cars!

The original Dubrovnik cable cars, with cabins for 15 people, date back to 1969. The cars were shut down in 1991 after the town sustained heavy bombing. But in the summer of 2010 and after a hefty renovation cost of five million euros, a fast and very orange version of the cable car returned during the Summer Festival.

Today, two large cabins whoosh 32 passengers 778 meters to the top of Mount Srd in less than four minutes. The cable car system is reversible and runs on a one-wire track when traveling in either direction.

Passengers board in the lower station at Ulica Petra Kresimira IV.

There are two routes to this station. The fastest way is to take one of the sets of stairs up from the eastern end of Stradun. The alternative route is to exit Old Town through Ploce Gate and then follow the winding streets to the station. The first route involves a bit more cardio.

The cable cars are open from 9 AM to midnight in June, July, and August. The operation shuts down earlier in the winter season. Check the hours and schedule at the base station. Visit the company’s website for more information.

Tickets can be purchased online on the Dubrovnik Cable Car website. This is advisable if visiting during peak season, want a particular day, or do not want to wait in a queue. The easiest way to purchase tickets is at the cable station.

Tickets can be purchased in euros or with a debit/credit card. Tickets cost €15 one-way and €27 return for adults, €4 one-way and €7 return for children 4 – 12, and free for children under 4 years of age. Strollers are allowed on board.

At the top, is Panorama Restaurant and Bar, serving Mediterranean fare, for lunch and dinner…or if the mood strikes a cold beverage and piping hot fries. There’s also a gift shop to pick up souvenirs.

Until next time…
